Wynlakes Women’s Club Ends Year with Crystal Bingo and Brunch

Wynlakes Women’s Club past presidents attending the May meeting were (l to r) Julianna Zell, Anne Parramore, Julie Lankford, Jean Wells, Norma Moore, and Lynda Turner.

The Wynlakes Women’s Club held the last meeting of the 2016-2017 organizational year on May 4, 2017, at the Swan Ballroom at Wynlakes Country Club. The meeting is special as installation of the new board is presented for the coming year. Current president, Julie Lankford, welcomed all the members.  The theme of the May meeting was “Crystal Bingo and Brunch” which began with brunch and was followed the brief business meeting, installation of new officers, and “Crystal Bingo.”

Large crystal chandeliers elegantly decorated the Swan Ballroom while black and white tablecloths adorned the tables, and container gardens of mixed flowers served as centerpieces.  Fun balloons and bingo cards at the tables signaled that Crystal Bingo was to follow the installation, all planned as a treat for the members and a way to thank them for their participation throughout the year and for their contributions to the Family Sunshine Center. The Center is a very special cause to the members of the Women’s Club, who contribute money, time, and gifts monthly throughout the organizational year. Penelope Poitevint, Sunshine Committee chairperson, reported earlier in April that a total of $7,206.00 had been given for the year; at the May meeting she reported another $955.00 was given. Much applause showed appreciation that the Women’s Club had been able to make these donations.

Doris Wolfe and Faye Livings have their nametags and are looking forward to a fun end of year meeting at the Wynlakes Women’s Club Crystal Bingo and Brunch.

Members enjoyed brunch before the installation and Crystal Bingo. The food is always special. The menu this year of quiche, grilled asparagus, parmesan-topped baked tomatoes, and cinnamon rolls were a culinary delight.  The mixed berries and sherbet topped off a delightful brunch.

President Julie Lankford recognized past presidents attending:  Julianna Zell, Lynda Turner, Ann Parramore, Norma Moore, Bert Owens, and Jean Wells.

Penelope Poitevint presided over the installation of new officers: Christy Fletcher, president; Andee Duett, vice president programs; Judy Sandlin, vice president socials; Susan Alldredge, vice president membership; Sharon Boatright, secretary; Ann Martin, treasurer; and Julie Lankford, past president, Ann Michaud, newsletter chairperson; Jan Holden, Sunshine Committee chairperson, and Sharron Smith, historian.  Many thanks to outgoing President Julie Lankford and all the board members as they were all hard working, very pleasant, and they made the year run so smoothly. Rotating off the board is Nancy Long, secretary; Lynn Peck, treasurer; Shirley Wesson, Telephone Committee chairperson; Penelope Poitevint, Sunshine Committee chairperson; Sharon Thomason, historian; and Julianna Zell, past president.

The fun began after the officer installation. Members received one bingo card and could buy additional bingo cards with proceeds going to the Family Sunshine Center. Multiple gifts that included the beautiful centerpieces brought hopes that many members could win prizes. Conversations between games reminisced on the fun and interesting meetings over the year. As always, informative speakers presented great programs. Charles Jinright, President of the Montgomery City Council spoke at one meeting; Dr. Carl Schmidt spoke on health subjects; Frances McGowin represented the Service Dogs of Alabama, and Rhea Kirk presented a program of “Miss Manners.” We had fun remembering the spring fashion show presented by Chicos and the members in the club who modeled. Other events include the welcome brunch in September; the wonderful holiday coffee in December at Merrily Burgos’s beautiful home where Karen Sellers from the Family Sunshine Center received donations of money and gifts from the club, and the wonderful night-time spring social at Lynda Turner’s lovely home in April where members and their guests enjoyed a grand evening.  We cannot forget the other fun social events throughout the year, planned so expertly by  social chairman Andee Duett. What fun for those attending lunch bunch at different restaurants, painting at Barb’s on Mulberry, walking through Al’s Antique Gallery, touring Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum, enjoying the girls night out at Opelika Performing Arts Center, traveling to Petals From the Past in Jemison, and lunching at the Gazebo Tea Room.

Nancy Long and Jean Jones were all smiles as the enjoyed the last meeting of the year for the Wynlakes Women’s Club.

Members attending “Crystal Bingo and Brunch” were Anne Amsler, Frances Berryman, Betty Joy Blankenship, Sharon Boatright, Karen Brantner, Janis Brassell, Linda Browder, Lindy Cadrette, Cyndi Carter, Alma Collier, Joan Crocker, Louise Cunningham, Ollie Currie, Vicki Dendis, Ginny Dietvorst, Andee Duett, Christy Fletcher, Barbara Hailes, Margaret Hewitt, Jan Holden, Jean Jones, Julie Lankford, Faye Livings, Nancy Long, Ann Martin, Betty Meany, Ann Michaud, Norma Moore, Delores Nelson, Bert Owens, Anne Parramore, Lynn Peck, Rita Pickette, Malone Pilgrim, Penelope Poitevint, Anne Reaves, Linda Roberts, Shirley Rose, Levis Rushton, Barbara Smith, Linda Sztuka, Sharon Thomason, Lynda Turner, Debbie Wakefield, Jean Wells, Shirley Wesson, Doris Wolfe, Nancy Worley, Julianna and Betty Ziri.

We all said “Farewell” and “See you in September” as we left the meeting; but throughout the summer, special friendships and bonds that have been made through the Wynlakes Women’s Club will continue, a truly special benefit.
