sez: Go see this Ghost
Ghost
Rider (PG-13)
Nicholas Cage,
Eva Mendes, Sam Elliot
The Plot:
Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) was just a young man when he learned
that his father and partner in a motorcycle carnival act, Barton Blaze
(Brett Cullen), was terminally ill from cancer. But Mephistopheles (Peter
Fonda), the Devil himself appeared to young Blaze to bargain for his soul.
Mephistopheles tells Johnny that in exchange for his services at a future
time, he would cure Johnny’s father. Johnny agrees only to find out that
playing with fire can truly burn you. Mephisto cures Barton but allows
him to die shortly thereafter in a contrived accident.
Johnny becomes emotionally distant, anxiously awaiting the day
when his curse will be fulfilled. That day comes with the arrival of Blackheart,
Mephistopheles’ son. Blackheart doesn’t love his father quite as much as
Johnny did and seeks to usurp his patriarch with a contract for the long
dead souls of an entire town of evil people.
Mephisto activates Blaze as his Ghost Rider, a bounty hunter
sent to collect the souls the devil has won. Blaze knows that he must stop
Blackheart, but he also can’t let the contract fall into Mephistopheles’
hands either.
Meanwhile Blaze must also try to win back Roxanne, his adolescent
girlfriend who he left standing in the rain on the eve of their planned
elope, the day after his father died. Roxanne is now a reporter and boy
does she have a story to tell.
The Point:
As it turns out Ghost Rider had a lot more going for it than
the credit I gave it initially. After all I am a male aged 18-49, I collected
comic books as a kid, and with no children I have a fair amount of disposable
income, the moviemaking formula says I’m the perfect audience for this
movie and this time the formula was right. I never really latched on to
Ghost Rider comics, I focused more on superheroes of the long underwear
brigade, but Nick Cage and Eva Mendes both pulled off performances that
got my attention.
Being fans of screen veterans Sam Elliot and Peter Fonda, or
better yet fans of their work, also helped to round out this movie. The
film was well paced, the obligatory super hero origin story was taken care
of rather quickly and the performances were spectacular.
I believe that fans of the action/superhero genre or even those
who can appreciate irony (this movie is big on irony) will find their money
and time well spent.
