sez: See the Premonition
Premonition
(PG-13)
Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon, Kate Nelligan
The Plot:
Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) has a typical upper-middle class
life. Linda’s husband, Jim (Julian McMahon), has a high paying job as a
sales manager. Linda’s problem is an inexplicable and growing disconnection
with her husband. Linda encourages Jim to spend more time at home with
his family, but job pressures are getting in the way.
Linda wakes one morning to the news that her husband is dead.
She is obviously crushed and seems lost. Linda cries herself to sleep only
to discover that it was all a dream. Jim is alive and well. But as the
week progresses, Linda’s dreams do as well. She soon discovers that her
“dreams” are actually premonitions of events that have not yet taken place.
As Linda begins to piece together the puzzle she discovers that
not only her husband’s life but the lives of her children and the sanctity
of her marriage hang in the balance. Even as Linda tries to change things
it seems that fate has a way of following its own course.
The Point:
With what seems like an unprecedented move towards originality
and new ground the American film industry is beginning to take new risks
that challenge audiences’ comprehension and stimulates imagination without
otherwise involving Hobbits and Hogwarts. Premonition is an example of
what can be done when slightly bizarre ideas are given a chance to flourish.
I will freely admit that Premonition seemed somewhat chaotic,
almost schizophrenic at times, with abrupt style shifts that made me think
I was watching the first romantic comedy-horror-sci fi-drama ever made.
But it was comprehensive in its attempt to catch and retain my interest.
In other words, this film covered a lot of ground but left no time to take
in the scenery. In fact, I wasn’t even sure where I was going for most
of the trip.
In my opinion Sandra bullock did a fantastic job in her role
as Linda. She came across as a real person who, freaky prognostications
aside, was going through real problems that real people face everyday.
People can relate to that.
This story was interesting because Linda faces a real moral
dilemma. She learns a host of details surrounding her husband’s imminent
death, as well as his intention to have an affair with a co-worker.
Linda, rigid with jealousy, actually contemplates letting her husband die
in retaliation for his consideration of infidelity. I personally think
this is a blow to character sympathy for the audience but it is precisely
these unorthodox choices that make this movie special.
