sez: 13 unlucky for Ocean’s fans
Ocean’s
Thirteen
(PG-13)
George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino
The Plot:
Together again for one more spin on the wheel the gang of Ocean’s Eleven
comes together to plan another heist. Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), a
friend and “member” of Ocean’s Eleven, is double crossed by a conceited
billionaire hotel owner, Willie Bank (Pacino).
Bank reneges on a joint venture with Reuben, which touches off
a heart attack for Tishkoff. Danny Ocean (Clooney) and pals agree to take
revenge on Bank by hitting him where it hurts most, his ego.
Bank is set to open a new luxury casino on the strip in Vegas, but
Ocean and the gang have other plans. They intend to make this the worst
hotel opening in history, and change the odds to ensure that the house
looses millions. After a slight setback Ocean finds that the group must
turn to Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), the victim of their original heist,
for financing their plan to break Bank. Benedict agrees but only with a
condition that Ocean and company steal some precious diamonds that Bank
hordes in a nigh impregnable vault in his new casino.
The Point:
I have enjoyed what director Steven Soderbergh has done with the remake/sequel
Ocean franchise, but despite the many things this film had going for it,
the results did not meet my expectations.
Sure, the film is loaded with gags, jokes, sleight of hand tricks,
disguises, stunts and explosions. These are the staples that fans of the
Soderbergh Ocean’s franchise have come to expect. But the manner in which
this carnival of chaos plays out on the screen leaves a lot to be desired.
With the gang back in Las Vegas they all seem to be returning to their
roots.
There is even a scene in which Ocean and Rusty Ryan (Pitt) reminisce
about how they met Reuben and essentially reveal that they received a great
deal of con artist training from him. But despite this the heist seems
to come off as rather lack luster. Once all the prepoterous preparations
are made and the group actually starts to gamble and take Bank’s money
there seems to be very little flash either thematically or stylistically.
If this movie has anything going for it, then it is the comedy. The
jokes and gags are top notch and just the kind of thing we’ve come to expect
from Ocean and his boys.
Rounding out thirteen, this time around is the aforementioned Garcia,
reprising his role as Benedict, and Vincent Cassel, who returns as Francois
Toulor, in a neat little double-double cross between Toulor and Benedict.
Noticeably missing this time around are both Julia Roberts and Catherine
Zeta-Jones. This obliterates a running gag in the Ocean franchise to reprise
every major character in some way to the succeeding chapter. Producer Jerry
Weintraub said that this couldn’t be avoided because they (the writers)
couldn’t find a way to bring these two characters into the story. My advice,
hire better writers, the movie would have been much better off.
