Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
(PG-13)
Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Lawrence Fishburne

The Plot:

The worldwide media is buzzing about the impending marriage of Dr. Reed Richards (Gruffudd) and Dr. Susan Storm (Alba). But soon the Earth is buzzed in a different way, a flyby from some weird silver alien (voiced by Fishburne) that seems to be riding on a surfboard.
Set considerably some time after the Fantastic Four came on the scene and did battle with Dr. Doom, Rise of the Silver Surfer pits the group against this strange silver alien that streaks across the sky leaving weather anomalies and other weirdness in his wake.
The appearance of the Silver Surfer seems to be linked with a series of mile wide shafts appearing in Earth’s surface. But what does it mean?
Susan Storm discovers that the Silver Surfer is actually a scout for an entity known as Galactus, devourer of worlds; and Earth is on the menu next.
In connection with the surfer’s appearance, but inexplicable beyond that, the Fantastic Four’s old rival Dr. Victor Von Doom has been released from his prison in Latveria. No doubt Doom has his own plans for manipulating the surfer to his advantages.
The Fantastic Four must pull together and stop Doom and convince the Surfer to leave before Galactus leaves Earth in the rough shape of charcoal briquette.

The Point:

As a sequel this movie is terrific. It builds on the characters from the first film without having to re-invent them for a new audience. Even newcomers are caught up to speed quickly.
Downsides to this movie stem primarily from a long edit and weak source material; let’s face it these movies were adapted from comic books, a completely different medium, that were written for children of relatively young age.
Take into account that the target audience for this movie is kids ages 13-17 that are likely to buy 32-ounce, sugar-laden soft drinks and it is easy to see why the theater may be writhing with children by film’s end.
This was certainly not a bad movie and for fans of the F4 comics it will be a nice treat. For everyone else save your money and wait for DVD.
