Edgewood Academy defeated region foe Springwood Academy (Lanett) 50-18 Friday. Edgewood is now 3-0 for the season and has won its games by margins of 30, 31 and 32 points. Things are still not what they should be with the Wildcats even though great improvement has been made since the season started. “The first two games we had to come from behind. This week we started out with a bang and finished strong, it was just the in between that causes some concern,” Wildcats head coach Bobby Carr said. 

Edgewood’s star running back Josh Crawford ran back the opening kickoff 78 yards and the Wildcats were out front to stay. The next Wildcats possession reminded fans of the recent four state championships won by the Wildcats in the last five years. The Wildcats started on their 8 yard line and drove Springwood into the ground. After 17 plays, almost 7 minutes of possession and 92 yards later, Crawford burst into the end zone for a touchdown. Taylor Hawthorne then connected with Keith Johnson on a short pass for the 2 point conversion. The Wildcats even stopped Springwood’s next possession when Daniel Green picked off a pass. A 28 yard touchdown pass from Hawthorne to Heath Young put the Wildcats up 21-0.

Then Springwood mounted a comeback. Hawthorne was intercepted and Springwood returned it into the end zone to put points on the board. Edgewood was forced to punt and Springwood scored again. With a minute to go in the half the Wildcats lead was only 21-12. A touchdown was called back due to a penalty and Springwood held the momentum going into the locker room at intermission.

In the third quarter Edgewood fumbled and then had an 80 yard punt called back because of a penalty. Crawford scored from 13 yards out and that was called back. Finally with just 3 minutes left in the third quarter, Hawthorne scrambled into the end zone and then did the same for a 2-point conversion to extend the Wildcats lead to 29-12. Green scored a few minutes later on a reverse to conclude the third quarter 36-12. Hawthorne connected with Garrett Gibson midway in the final quarter and then Christian Barkley scored with 3 minutes remaining.

“We lost the momentum, but we got it back,” Hawthorne said. “We were better prepared this week than we were the first two weeks. I think that is why we could turn things back around.”

Getting the momentum back was important and it started at halftime for the Wildcats. “We made some adjustments with the offensive line at halftime and it worked. It helped our running game considerably in the second half,” Carr said.

Edgewood has now won 34 games in a row. The Wildcats will travel to Eufaula next week to play Lakeside Academy in a non-region game.
