Millbrook's Harris Garner (pictured) has told The Millbrook Independent that he intends to run for the Alabama Senate, District 30.
Garner is the owner of Garner Electric Company one of Millbrook's largest employers. Garner will run as a Republican.
Geographically the senate district will be quite different than what it has been in the past. The configuration of the seat, which was held for many years by late "Walking" Wendell Mitchell of Luverne, meandered from parts of Autauga and Elmore counties all the way through Pike, Butler and Crenshaw counties. After re-apportionment and beginning with the 2014 election, the district will be pre-dominantly western Elmore County, central and eastern Autauga County, a small portion of south Chilton County and almost all of Coosa County. The overwhelming majority of votes will come from Elmore and Autauga Counties, which will hold a similar number of votes each.
Garner has spent his entire life in Millbrook, and along with his wife Cathy of thirty years, has four children and two grand children. Garner is 50 years old.
The Millbrook native graduated from Stanhope Elmore High School and served in the United States Navy.
Garner has been President of the Millbrook Area Chamber of Commerce twice (currently serving in his second term) and past president of the Mustang Quarterback Club.
"I look forward to the challenges of running for office and the challenges of serving the fine citizens of District 30. I'm ready to hear the concerns of the people and represent them," Garner said.
The seat is currently held by Bryan Taylor (R) of Prattville.
