It was not the way to end a dismal season. The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs (SEHS) failed to finish on a high note last week in their final game losing to Central-Phenix City 66-40. SEHS was already dismissed from the playoff bracket and the loss to the Red Devils placed the Mustangs under .500 for the season with a record of 4-6.

It seemed destined to be a bad night as the Red Devils returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then proceeded to score the next two times on offense. To make matters worse, the Red Devils recovered an onsides kick after their second touchdown, a ploy the Mustangs made successful for a good part of the season.

Trying to make a comeback, the Mustangs collected a few first downs heading into Red Devil territory late in the first quarter, but Mustangs QB Jaryus Wilson threw a screen pass into the arms of a Red Devil linebacker, who proceeded to run 50 yards for the fourth Central score of the opening stanza. The score was 24-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Central tacked on a couple of more touchdowns and the Mustangs got on the board a couple of times as well before the half, but at intermission the Mustangs still trailed the visitors 38-13.

The second half was pretty much a wash with Central adding 28 points and the Mustangs adding 27. "We had our chances after falling behind early. A couple of times we pulled to within ten points, but our defense just couldn't stop them and make them kick it back to us," Mustangs head coach Jeff Foshee said.

The Mustangs had major hurdles to overcome the 2013 season. The team lost 16 starters to graduation and had little, if any, experience defensively when the season started. "It was difficult and at times it was frustrating. But, cycles come and go and the best part about this year is that we have a lot of kids that got quite a bit of expereince," Foshee remarked.

And the experienced gained should start showing next year. The Mustangs look to have 14 starters return, and many of those will still be under classmen.

Several skill players will return most notably running back B.J. Smith. In the Central game Smith tallied more than 100 yards once again and ran his season total to more than 1,000 yards, and that was just in 9 games played for the swift junior.
