The Millbrook City Council appointed Michael Gay to fill out the current term representing Ward 2
The Millbrook City Council appointed Michael Gay on Monday to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Joe Lott.
"I am grateful for the opportunity the city council has given me to serve the people of Ward Two," Gay said.
Lott suffered from a back ailment earlier in the year, which grew worse. Lott resigned from the Millbrook City Council in September when it became apparent he faced a lengthy recovery following surgery. Gay said he visited Lott, who is currently in a rehabilitation facility, prior to Monday's announcement.
"I spoke to Joe and told him I intended to apply for the appointment. I respect Joe personally and I told him I am impressed with the progress the city has made during his time on the council," Gay said.
Gay was one of five residents in Ward 2 who applied for the appointment including: Olmond Lawerence Hall, Penny Nichols, Richard Popwell, and Leon Presley. Fred Watts, President of the Millbrook City Council commended all five candidates for being willing to serve their neighbors on the city council.
"I am glad to see so many people put their name forward and being willing to serve, but of course we can only select one name. Congratulations to Michael. To the other I urge them to stay involved and help us to make Millbrook a better place to live," Watts said.
Gay lives in the Magnolia Ridge area of Millbrook with his wife Jennifer, daughter Amber and son Chase. Since 2000, he has worked as an agent for State Farm Insurance. He previously served State Farm as a public affairs specialist. He recently moved his office from Montgomery to Prattville, just across from Millbrook at I-65 exit 181.
He currently serves on the boards of directors of: Grandview Family YMCA, Millbrook Community Players (Vice President), and Millbrook-Area Chamber of Commerce. Gay is also a member of the Millbrook Men's Club and Robinson Springs United Methodist Church and serves on its finance committee.
Before moving to Millbrook Gay was active in roles of community leadership in Shelby County. He has graduated Leadership Elmore County and Leadership Shelby County. He is a former Director of the City of Alabaster Water Board and Shelby county Economic Development Authority.
Vacancies on a city council are filled with appointment by the existing council based upon the municipal class size of the city. Millbrook is a Class VI municipality and appoints vacancies according to Alabama law.
