Millbrook residents are making it a priority to help kids in need through the world's largest Christmas project of its kind. The project, Operation Christmas Child, transforms shoeboxes into gifts by filling them with toys, school supplies and hygiene items and delivering them to kids in more than 100 countries. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected more than 100 million gift-filled shoeboxes.
This year, Millbrook residents contributed gifts to the national collection goal of 7.2 million gift-filled shoeboxes. While some families have already packed actual shoeboxes this year, other residents are packing them virtually through an online giving tool. By building a box online, appropriate gift items are given and delivered to kids in the poorest and hardest-to-reach countries around the globe.
By visiting samaritanspurse.org/buildonline, Millbrook residents can learn how to build a box online. They can select a child's age and gender, shop through an online selection of gifts, virtually "pack" an empty shoebox and finish it off by writing a note of encouragement to their shoebox gift recipient. Then, using tracking technology, participants can "follow" the box to the country where it will be delivered. It's a convenient, yet meaningful way to join in a project that will bring hope to kids living in desperate situations.
Although the collection of shoebox gifts at the local drop-off location collection is finished, building a box online allows the gift of giving to continue. For more information about Operation Christmas Child, visit samaritanspurse.org.
