During a school day Caleb Walrath and Adonis James' relationship is that of student and teacher at Stanhope Elmore High School. But during monthly training the two men are colleagues in the Army National Guard (ARNG) through the Recuit Sustainment Program (RSP).
Walrath is currently a student in the SEHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. He is convinced military life is for him, and he is working toward a college education through an ROTC scholarship.
James, an algebra teacher at SEHS, has given more than nine years of service in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves. He turned to the ARNG because he is interested in serving as an officer.
"I decided I would like to serve as an officer and the Army National Guard will give me that opportunity," James said.
The RSP is a component in a balancing act for the US Army. According to the US Army's own assesment the current demand for forces exceeds the sustainable supply and limits the US Army's ability to provide ready forces for other contingencies. The RSP is intended to ensure our soldiers and their families have the quality of life they deserve and that the ARNG recruits and sustains a high quality force.
