Edgewood (AISA Class A) hosted Kingwood (Class AAA) last week and the both schools recorded a victory between the girls and boys match ups. The Edgewood girls defeated the Lady Lions 38-33 after overcoming a halftime deficit and foul trouble in the second quarter. Hannahlee Harris led the way for the Lady Wildcats with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kevi Hansen added 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Mady Weldon managed the Edgewood offense well and her excellent play made it easier for Harris and Hansen to knock down the points for the Lady Wildcats. Weldon also scored 7 points.
"We didn't play our best game but we found a way to win. That is what is different this year. Last year we were in a lot of close ball games but couldn't take that next step to winning them. Last year we would have found a way to lose a game like this one," Edgewood coach Kevin Smith. It was the first game back after the holiday break for Edgewood and the team was playing without a regular starter.
But the win for Edgewood is more than just a notch in the favored column. The Lady Wildcats defeated a AAA team and that is bound to help a program that has struggled over the last few years. "It's a big win for us because we are continuing to build a winning mentality and boost our confidence. To be honest, they are all big wins for us. We have won four of the last six and that's important since we only won three all last year," Smith noted. "But winning sure helps the team to see results from all of the hard work." The Edgewood girls are 4-5 on the season and begin area play this week.
The Edgewood boys didn't have quite the good luck the girls did. The Wildcats took a tough loss 62-60 in the final seconds. The Wildcats led after the first quarter 17-12 but then gradually faded and eventually trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter.
Edgewood then rallied and scored with just 6 seconds to go to tie the game. But as Kingwood dashed down court the Wildcats committed a foul with only one second remaining on the clock. Kingwood sank both free throws and made off with a victory. "It was a shame to lose it the way we did but I really liked the intensity our guys showed in the game and the way they came back," Edgewood coach Clint Welch said.
Jordan Edgeworth led the Wildcats with 19 points. Josh Crawford and Hunter Glenn scored 13 points each.
"I saw some positive signs with our defense. It is tough on us to get some things done because we are so small. We have to change what we are doing based on who we play." Edgewood is 3-5 for the season.
