It was a busy week for the Stanhope Elmore wrestling team. The team won two of three matches. In the first, the Mustangs whipped Opelika 45-24 with Travis Gartman (132 pounds) and Logan Smith (170 pounds) winning by pin. The Mustangs then defeated Hueytown 50-29 but recorded no pins in the match.
SEHS defeated Prattville Christian (PCA) 58-21. Winners by pin were: Ty Naquin (106), Josh Cherry, T.J. Burke (126), Brandon Householder (145), Jared Mercer (152), Malik Hibley (195).
The Mustangs then took on a tough Oak Mountain squad that proved to be better. Oak Mountain defeated the Mustangs 46-19. T.J. Burke (120 pounds) was the only Mustang to record a victory with a pin.
While the week was good for the Mustangs the team is still fighting nagging injuries. "We are hurting on injuries and can't quite field a full team. That's the reason our total scoring has dropped," SEHS coach Brian Bradford said. SEHS has so many injured that Bradford only took 9 wrestlers to the Barry Mask Tournament over this past weekeend.
SEHS stand at 22-16 for the entire season and the Mustangs are ready to host late season matches this week, including a match with Vestavia and then a 4-way match with Catholic, Lee and Smith Station coming to town on Thursday.
"The 4-way match will be our last prep before we go to the Sectional Tournament," Bradford said. The sectional will be February 7th. "We have a lot that may qualify for the State Tournament. Of course, injuries will have a lot to say about that, Bradford said.
SEHS has three wrestlers to exceed the lofty 30 win mark this year: Ty Naquin, T.J. Burke and Harry Walker.
