David L. "Jack" Benz II, 91, of Louisville, KY and Millbrook, AL, passed away January 25, 2014, in Luverne, AL. Born in Gary, IN, Jack moved to Louisville at age 7 after his parents, David and Elva, passed away. His Aunt Gertrude and Uncle Phillip Benz raised him. Jack was a graduate of Male High School and attended the University of Louisville. He was a lifelong member of Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church, holding many positions of service and worked as an industrial engineer with American Air Filter and American Standard.
Jack was a World War II veteran, serving in both theaters. In addition to his church service, Jack relished woodworking and general handyman jobs, helping his family and friends with many projects. Most of all, he loved being with his family, eating ice cream and laughing. In his later years, he gave freely of his time and resources to Bridges of Faith and their work with Ukrainian orphans. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jean Benz. He is survived by his sons, David Benz III (Kathy) of Bowling Green, KY, Richard Benz (Karen) of Louisville, KY, and Tom Benz (Larissa) of Millbrook, AL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Merrill Benz (Frances survives) and is survived by his brother Jim Benz (Bernice), and by 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
