Edgewood Academy's basketball season came to a halt in the AISA Class A semi-final last week as the Wildcats fell to Chambers Academy, 48-44. Edgewood ended the season with a record of 12-11 while Chambers stood at 25-2 after the semi-final.
Edgewood slugged it out with its opponent and actually took the lead at intermisson 26-25. But when the second half rolled around Edgewood went into a slump, and despite some sloppy play from Chambers, fell behind on the scoreboard. The Wildcats failed to make a shot from the floor in the last 4 minutes of the third period. Chambers began to pull away and had its biggest lead at 4:34 remaining in the game, 42-36.
The Wildcats rallied late and managed to gain a couple of extra possessions with aggressive defensive play. In the final seconds Edgewood failed to make a couple of shots that sealed its fate. Jordan Edgeworth led the Wildcats with 16 points and Josh Crawford added another 10.
Edgewood's game plan was to try and control the ball to keep Chambers from having excessive offensive opportunities. "We pretty much did what we wanted with our game plan. They average 70 points per game so we slowed down the tempo and controlled the ball fairly well," Edgewood coach Clint Welch said. "We played pretty sloppy in parts of the game and we missed some shots we really needed."
Edgewood's season started out slow and took off in late January. The team came together at the best time of the year and although a state championship did not come their way, the Wildcats had a successful season. "I'm really proud of the way we turned things around. It took us a while to get everything together but we gave ourselves a chance to win it all and the season was a success," Welch said.
