Last weekend there were more critters than usual scampering through the woods and around the pond at Lanark, the headquarters of the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) and site of the Alabama Nature Center (ANC). The AWF was the venue for the ANC's fourth annual Critter Crawl, a 10k/5k racecourse through the nearly 5-miles of walking trails at the ANC. Over 250 runners participated in Saturday's race. Avid runners and newbies alike were treated to the sights and sounds of nature as they moved along the course.

Marla Ruskin, Communications Specialist for the AWF, said this event is a fantastic way to expose people to beautiful trails located at Lanark in Millbrook.

The 10K, 5K TRAIL RUN and 1 mile race took runners through a portion of the Alabama Nature Center's 5 mile trail system. Lucas Culpepper took first place in the 10K with a time of 44:59 in the first ever 10K on the trails. "This is my third trail race and I absolutely love to run at Lanark, Lucas stated. I love the hills and the creek crossing was an awesome touch." Kevin Banning had a fantastic time of 23:16 on the 5K TRAIL RUN.

Although most people wore your standard running attire, there were a few butterflies, skunks, birds and other critters running lose on the property. The flight of beautiful butterflies took home the 1st place prize in the critter contest.
