Last Wednesday Millbrook's Harris Garner announced that he will not take a salary if he is elected to the Alabama Senate. Garner, running as a Republican, seeks the District 30 seat currently held by Bryan Taylor of Prattville, who is not seeking re-election.

"Our founders set up a country to be led by public servants, not people getting rich in office," Garner said. "As I travel across the district listening to the folks, I see people that are sick and tired of career politicians living off the public dime."

"That's why I won't take a salary as the state senator for District 30," Garner said.

The newly drawn district takes in all of Autauga and Coosa Counties, and parts of Chilton, Elmore, and Tallapoosa Counties. Garner is the President of the Millbrook Chamber of Commerce and a lifelong resident of the district.

Garner and his wife, Cathy, own and operate Garner Electric in Millbrook. "We started Garner Electric at our kitchen table with nothing in the bank but hard work and a lot of prayer. When we had saved a little bit of money, I built my house from the ground up with my bare hands. We've been blessed and have grown the business to more than 35 employees."

Garner said the time is finally right to answer the call to service. "Now that my fourth child is graduating high school and my oldest three have all graduated from college, I'm finally in a position to dedicate myself in service to this community in the State Senate."

"I'm not taking a salary for the same reason I don't ask my parents to pay me for taking out the trash while I'm visiting them at their house. I do it because it needs to be done and because I love my folks. This district is my home. I have lived here my entire life. I'm going to Montgomery to serve our families and our neighbors. You don't have to pay me for that."

Garner sees too many politicians and too few statesmen in today's political environment. "I've never run for public office before and I will not be a career politician. I'm not going to show up on the ballot every four years for several decades. I'm going to serve a term or two and then do all I can to support the next round of public servants and community leaders."
