The Stanhope Elmore High School baseball team won its only two games played in the rain shortened Wetumpka Tournament over Spring Break week.
The Mustangs opened the tournament with a win over LAMP 11-2. Blaine Milam powered the Mustangs at the plate and on the hill. Milam racked up four RBIs on three hits for Stanhope. He singled in the sixth inning and doubled in the third and seventh innings. On the mound, Milam worked out of three tough situations while working five innings and allowing only one earned run on five hits. The Mustangs removed all doubt late in the game when the bats came to life. The Mustangs drilled LAMP pitching for 6 runs in the final inning.
Chance Kessinger, Tyler Matthews, Andrew Casey and Daniel Crews had multiple hits in addition to Milam's trio of hits.
The Mustangs second game of the tournament ended with another wide margin of victory as Stanhope whipped Holtville 11-4. A big third inning rally sparked the blowout win as the Mustangs pushed a half dozen runs across the plate.
Dylan Sexton led the way by racking up 4 runs batted in on 4 hits. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the first, third, and fourth innings. The Mustangs had the lead for good after the initial inning when they scored 3 runs on an error, an RBI single by Mathews, and an RBI triple by Casey.
Casey worked 4 innings to get the win.
"We played very well in the games we got to play. It was too bad the rain came and wiped out the rest of the tournament," Mustangs head coach Scott Johnson said. "I was really happy to see us swing the bats so well and get runs across the plate. We will need to continue the trend with the big weeks we have coming up."
Stanhope will face in Wetumpka in three area games this week.
