Two families connected to the Millbrook City Council are suffering loss. Joe Lott, former Millbrook City Councilan died on Sunday after a lenghty illness. Marcia Monroe, wife of Earle Monroe who currently serves on the city council, also died Sunday after a stroke on Saturday.

Lott was a longtime resident businessman and community servant in addition to his work on the city council. He managed three different banks in Millbrook. In the 1980s Lott helped Millbrook, which was small and struggling financially with their first bond issue which was used to begin sewer service in the city. Lott also helped many businesses in town, some who say they may not have made it otherwise, with loans and banking services.

Elected to his first term in 2004, Lott was re-elected in 2008 in the only contested race and in 2012.

His last few months on the city council were dominated by illness which eventually caused him to resign in late September 2013.

In his resignation letter to Mayor Al Kelley, Lott praised his fellow council members writing, "It gives me a certain sense of acomplishment knowing that I may have had, along with my fellow council members, at least a small hand in some of what we accomplished as a team."

Kelley said the Lott took his job on the city council very seriously.

"He paid attention and kept up with what was going on at the city. Even when he went into the hospital he would call me on the phone often asking for updates on this or that. He was an asset to this community and he will be missed tremndously," Kelley said.

Marcia Monroe was someone known to a great many in Millbrook. She was invloved in various civic organizations. A former school teacher at Edgewood Academy, Monroe was a native Spanish speaker and worked with the Millbrook Police Department for years when they needed a Spanish translator.

Monroe also worked as a host in a program designed tro help visiting families of foreign servicemen at the USAF Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base. She helped provide a cultural emersion familiy members exposing them to historically and culturally significant sites in the area.
