|More friends departed|

It is difficult to lose friends. It wasn't long ago we lost a community servant in Ralph Hull. Within twenty four hours this weekend we lost two more.
Former city councilman Joe Lott passed away Sunday. Joe was elected to his first term in 2004 and was re-elected in 2008 as well as 2012. Joe started to experience some health difficulties after the last election. Last September Joe decided it was best for the city and the ward he represented to resign. Since that time Joe valiantly fought his problems until the Lord decided it was time for him to rest.
Joe Lott served the community as a banker and has been involved with just about everything pro-Millbrook and positive for decades. Lott has been President of the Men's Club, a Kiwanis member and a member of just about any organization that has contributed to the city. When Joe resigned from the council Mayor Al Kelley said, "He always was involved. He was always ready and prepared to lead us, no matter what it was."
As The Independent stated after his resignation from the council, "Lott's influence as a banker has a far reaching affect. In the days when Millbrook was struggling to grow and develop, Lott helped many a small business with capital. There are many businesses alive today in Millbrook because of his willingness to help as a lender."
I remember Joe as a serious man that always wanted to find a better way, especially for Millbrook. I also found it wise on several occasions to bounce an idea off of Joe knowing I would get a very sincere and straight answer.
We also lost Marcia Monroe, wife of city councilman Earle Monroe. Marcia's death was a complete surprise and totally unexpected. Marcia was a very sweet lady who gave of herself for the benefit of others. In addition to her activity at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal church, Marcia contributed to our community with an international flavor. For many years she served as a host to families coming from other countries that were attending the Air War College at Maxwell AFB. Marcia would make sure they were introduced to our local communities and would learn about customs, economy, etc. You may recall a story The Independent published about Marcia last year when she took a group of international visitors to pick cotton in a local field, something the visitors had a ball in doing. In the past, Marcia also served the city by serving as a Spanish interpreter for the Millbrook Police Department.
It was a difficult time for the members of St. Michael this past Sunday, of which I am one. Our newly remodeled sanctuary was to be used for services for the first time since the renovations began many months ago. Needless to say it was a somber time knowing that Marcia would not be able to join us.
We will miss Joe and Marcia and are grateful for their contributions to our community. May God grant comfort to their grieving families.
