The Millbrook Public Library will soon be signing up readers for their Summer Reading Program. The theme of this year's program is "Fizz, Bang, Read." Picture a mad scientist that 'mixes it up' and reads all sorts of books to gain ideas for experiments. June 21st is the deadline to sign up for the program.
The Summer Reading Program is a summertime reading program for readers 4-12 years of age. Children are encouraged to read books at or above their reading level during the program. It keeps those early reading skills sharp through the school break; it also rewards the children with lots of prizes for their effort.
The "triumphant breakthrough," so to speak, with the MPL Summer Reading Program is the giant party at the end. Near the end of July, Angie Dewberry, Children's Librarian at MPL, coordinates a huge party at the Millbrook Civic Center to heap praise and goodies on the readers that took part. Every child that participates will get prizes and have a great time. However those prolific readers who read lots of books are further rewarded and recognized for their efforts.
All books read must be on the child's reading level or above and they must be library books to be counted. For every 10 books read the child's name is entered into a drawing for a bicycle. The deadline for books to be counted is July 18th. The awards ceremony will be held at the Millbrook Civic Center on July 23 at 10am.
Each week families also meet at the library to share in a kid-friendly movie, projects, games and other fun. Wednesdays are the day for a kid-friendly movie. Children and their families are welcome to come and watch a movie (see schedule below). Bring your drink, and the library will pop the popcorn as you settle in for the show. Movies scheduled for Movie Day include:
