Millbrook, others pursuing agreement with Central Alabama Community College

Millbrook could be the site for a future satellite campus of Central Alabama Community College

CACC 2

By ART PARKER

The City of Millbrook and other government entities, along with the Elmore County Board of Education, are pursuing an agreement with Central Alabama Community College of Alex City (CACC). The city and the community college established a line of communication over a year ago with the idea of bringing services to the west Elmore County area. Last week The Independent learned that the discussions had reached another level.

Other than CACC and the City of Millbrook, other entities now playing a role in the discussions are the City of Wetumpka, the Elmore County Commission, the Elmore County Economic Development Authority (ECEDA) and the Elmore County Board of Education.

No contractual relationship has been created between the parties but Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley said the hope is that common ground will be established soon in order to provide services to the area.

"We are extremely pleased that Central Alabama Community College has considered proposals and may extend its educational services to our area," Kelley said. "This is a golden opportunity for west Elmore County and we are delighted that the college views our area as an excellent location to expand and offer more educational opportunities to the people of central Alabama. We hope that all of our discussions will lead to a long-term relaionship."

At one time there was some concern that a CACC expansion into Millbrook may not be in the best interest of Trenholm State Technical College in Montgomery. But Kelley said that was not the case and that Trenholm could actually see some "mutual benefit" with CACC coming to the area.

The escalated talks with CACC come shortly after Wallace Community College of Selma began to show interest in moving to Autauga County. The Independent has not learned of any agreement or plans for that scenario to develop. Autauga and Elmore counties are in different services areas of the state as far as the Department of Post Secondary Education is concerned so it is technically possible for both Millbrook and Prattville to have a community college campus. Currently, Autauga County is served by Wallace and Elmore County has shared service between Trenholm and CACC.
