06-12mudcreekIt seems most children have a universal desire for mud and dirt. At the creekside at the Alabama Nature Center there is mud aplenty and a creek to wash it off when you are done.

Last week was a busy one at the Alabama Nature Center in Millbrook, headquarters for the Alabama Wildlife Federation. Expedition Lanark, a summercamp hosted at the ANC kicked off last weekend with nearly 40 campers in attendance. Tim Gothard, Executive Director of the AWF said attendance typically rises after the first week so the are expecting more children at the ANC in the coming weeks. There are many age-appropriate activites and nearly all are outdoors and have an educational component. However Gothard said sometimes the children just love to cut loose and play in the dirt.

Last Saturday the AWF hosted Hydrangea Fest, which has become a popular event each year especially with gardeners. Maria Pacheco-West, Lanark Grounds Specialist provided guided tour of the grounds, focusing on the many hydrangeas.
