Central Alabama Community College, in conjunction with the Department of Postsecondary Education, recently announced plans resulting from the new dual enrollment legislation and the impact it will have on training students for high demand, high wage jobs. Due to the $5 million dollar line item appropriated by the legislature, Career Technical Dual Enrollment Scholarships are available to high school students who plan to enroll in these programs.
The legislation also allows local employers to donate funds for specific dual enrollment programs. Industries will receive a 50% tax credit for their contributions and can designate that up to 80% be directed toward a specific program.
The Chancellor of the two-year college system, Dr. Mark Heinrich, spoke about what a great opportunity this is for the state of Alabama.
"Through this new career tech dual enrollment initiative, more high school students will now have the opportunity to pursue higher education and receive the necessary skills they need to succeed," Heinrich stated.
Dr. Susan Burrow, president of CACC introduced several representatives from industry who were in attendance.
"One of our main goals, here at CACC, is to make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our industries in our service area. It was great to see former dual enrollment students of ours - Daniel Dalton, Wingfield Engineering, Jeremy Clay Taylor, Alabama Power, and Jonathan Sandlin, Robinson Iron in attendance this morning, who are now working for these industries," Burrow said.
Numerous Economic Development leaders and K-12 representatives from throughout CACC's service area were in attendance. In addition to existing partnerships with Tallapoosa, Coosa, and Talladega Counties, CACC plans to expand course offerings in Elmore County and teach robotic and advanced manufacturing career courses at the Elmore County Career Technical Center and Academic Transfer courses at Stanhope Elmore HS this fall.
