Lisa West, local Millbrook Middle School teacher traveled to Dauphin Island, Al. to attend the "Fins, Fish and Fisheries" teacher workshop at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL).

This program was part of the Discovery Hall Programs, the education and outreach department at DISL. The workshop was an educational weeklong program, from June 8-12. During that time the teachers immersed themselves into the seafood industry and barrier island culture, and designed ideas for classroom discussions for the upcoming school year.

The participants learned about the different industry career opportunities, from fisheries management to aquaculture facilities. They also got a hands-on experience while trawling the waters of Mobile Bay aboard DISL's 65-ft. research vessel, The R/V Alabama Discovery. The teachers caught, dissected and examined local aquatic species. These educators immersed themselves into the living marshes and were able to participate in offshore netting practices at a local park.

Pamela Collins, an elementary school teacher from Birmingham comments,

"After coming here for ten years with my students, I was extremely impressed with the way the staff also educates at an adult level." Collins plans on bringing the rest of the science department educators from her school through the program.

At the end of the week the teachers shared lesson ideas, plans and strategies on how to incorporate the new information into the classroom in any grade level. The group left the workshop with topical information and activities suitable for the students.

The program is free for participants, thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC). For more information about the MASGC visit its website at www.masgc.org, and for more information on DISL, visit its website at www.disl.org.
