Representative Paul Beckman (Dist 88) gave the address at the Millbrook Area Chamber of Commerce's annual luncheon last week. Beckman's opening remarks decrying serious ethical problems in state politics seemed to resonate with Alabama's ranking last week as the 6th most corrupt state in a nationwide poll.
"We have got a situation where our state law allows for someone to leave the Alabama Senate, and turn right around and get a job as a lobbyist and lobby the Alabama House of Representatives. They can leave one body and immediately lobby the other body. We even have a former Govenor who left that office and could legally lobby both houses," Beckman said.
Beckman made another timely comment about education, particularly about the area's need for a community college.
"Right now there are discussions going on about a community college for this area. Millbrook is talking about it. Prattville is talking about it. Since I represent both areas Chancellor Mark Heinrich basically told me to stay out of it. But I feel certain this area needs a community college, because we do not have the skilled workforce to do the work that is already available," Beckman said.
Beckman also spoke to the issue of a state lottery. Harris Garner, Millbrook resident and candidate for the GOP nomination in Senate District 30, has called for the people to vote on the lottery. Beckman seemed to echo Garner's remarks.
There is a lot of money leaving Alabama and going to neighboring states every weekend because of the lottery. I'm not advocating for or against a lottery but I believe the people have the right to vote on it and so does Governor Bentley, he has said that.
The main order of business at the annual luncheon was to induct five new members to the MACC board of directors: Jerry Daniel, Lissa Monroe, Bill Meyers, Rusty Smith, and Chris Thompson. Harris Garner passed the gavel of leadership to Hal Hodge the new board president.
