A former Millbrook resident, and one-time Mayoral candidate, Carole A. Power, 62, will have her charge put before an Elmore County Grand Jury in October related to allegations of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12 years.

Carole A. Power, 62, formerly of Millbrook, and now a resident of Enterprise, Ala., was arrested June 8 for one count of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old. The arrest stems from a complaint filed May 28 on an alleged incident that reportedly occurred between December 2011 and January 2012.
The complaint was filed with the Millbrook Police Department at the end of May and alleged Power abused the child in a sexual manner while the child was under Power's supervision. The victim and alleged offender are related.
After an investigation, detectives with the MPD felt there was probable cause to obtain a warrant for the offender's arrest. Detectives consulted with the Elmore County District Attorney's Office with regard to the facts of this case. After reviewing the facts prosecutors agreed that there was sufficient evidence to obtain a warrant for the offender's arrest. On June 5, 2014, a warrant was obtained from the Elmore County Circuit Clerk's Office.
Ms. Power was taken into custody in Enterprise and transported to the Millbrook Police Department for processing. Upon completion of processing Ms. Power was transported to the Elmore County Jail. Ms. Power has since been released on bond.
"Due to the nature of this case and the fact that the victim is a minor child, there are very few details that we can release," Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson said. "As to the reason for the delay in the reporting of the incident, it is not uncommon for victims of sexual offenses, particularly juveniles, to delay disclosing the incident. Unfortunately some are never reported."
This case will be presented to the Elmore County Grand Jury for its consideration in October. Should the Grand Jury return an indictment against the offender, this case will be set for trial.
"People think police officers get used to handling cases like this. That's not necessarily the case," Johnson said. "After 26 years in law enforcement, cases involving children and the elderly still get to me, as well as most officers I know. You hate to think someone would do anything to harm a child or an older person. Unfortunately they do. That's why we do what we do. It's sad."
The Millbrook Independent contacted a family member of the child involved, and they issued this statement. "The family is working through the trauma with the child. Being a small town there is a lot of speculation, and even denial, but we request our privacy be respected."
