|The divinity in American independence|

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" - The Declaration of Independence
By the time the framers of the Declaration of Independence put pen to paper they had already decided that their treatment by the British King and Parliment had become intolerable. In particular the colonists were subject to taxation but they had no say, or representation, in the British parliment as did their countrymen in England. The Declaration was called the "Law of Nature." This led to a new kind of leadership. The Law of Nature meant that all factors in creating America were under the guidance of God. The Declaration of Independence was an acknowledgment that God had been a part of forming this nation. At this time many were saying that America was the product of existence of the laws of nature, as was the movement of the planets and the stars of the universe. Pastors picked up this theme of America as "the laws of nature" and it was preached from many pulpits in the colonies. The colonial leadership felt that America's destiny had entered into a new era of recognition.
By the time the word independence was being molded into law, it had taken on the acceptance of God. Theorists of the day saw "The Law of Nature" (independence) as borrowed from what philosophers had said for years. Men in such fields as Greek philosophy, Roman Jurists, medieval scholars, and Protestant reformers all had contributed to a new American philosophy. "The laws of nature" had placed America in a new, never tried before, divine way of life.
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both made similar statements: "That America ought to now concede and be recognized that God had placed in America a new Grand Nature in motion." They also said, "that the order of things in this land could not have happened without Divine intervention."
The Greatness of the 4th of July (Independence Day) is based, not on fireworks and family reunions, but on the determination of a people who live in a land that God created.
