Garrett Hartzog, who will be an 11th grader this year at Stanhope Elmore High School, has a different perspective for seconds on a clock than most people.

The up and coming Deatsville bull rider is representing Alabama in the National High School Rodeo and will travel with teammates to Rock Springs, Wyoming July 13-19 to compete at the 66th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR).

"I have been bull riding now for about 14 years," Hartzog told The Millbrook Independent. " I started off on sheep at 3-years-old and making it this far is just a small stepping stone to my lifelong dream which is to be a back to back to back professional bull riding world champion!"

Hartzog said, "You know bull riding is not just another sport, it's a way of life. I have met most of my best friends through rodeo. I am super excited to go to the national high school finals rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming. A friend of mine said one time 'One day we will all be nothing but a memory so take this time now to decide what you want to leave as your legacy.' I plan to go out there and bring home a shiny new buckle that has 2014 champion bull rider on it! I want to say a HUGE thank you to everybody that has helped me get this far in my career."

Hartzog comes from a family of rodeo enthusiasts, and helps run the family cattle farm in Deatsville. He is the son of Charlotte and Chris Hartzog, and has two brothers, Cody and Lane.

Featuring more than 1,500 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian Provinces, and Australia, the NHSFR is the world's largest rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named an NHSFR National Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 – based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds – to advance to Saturday evening's final round. National champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

Again, this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcasts of each NHSFR performance will also air online at NHSRATV.com. Performance times are 7 p.m. on July 13, and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NHSFR contestants have the opportunity to enjoy shooting sports, volleyball, contestant dances, family-oriented activities, church services sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys and shopping at the NHSFR tradeshow.
