Curtis H. Brantley Jr., age 66, of Wetumpka, AL, passed away from complications of Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsons Disease, early on the morning of July 22, 2014, at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City. "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." II Corinthians 5:8. Visitation was be at Brookside Funeral Home in Millbrook, AL, on Thursday, July 24, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with Rev. Brandon Scroggins officiating. Mr. Brantley was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis H. Brantley, Sr. and Catherine Wright Brantley. He honorably served in the U.S. Army for four years and retired from the Air National Guard after 20 years. He dedicated 36 years of service to the veterans of Alabama, working at the VA Regional office, Montgomery, AL, retiring in 2004 as the Assistant Service Center Manager. His greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sheila Brantley, son Chad Brantley (Kim), daughter Stephanie Robertson (George III), grandchildren Sophie, Connor, Sianna and George IV, and sister, Ann Easterling. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Curt was buried in Brookside Memorial Gardens with military honors. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Murff, Tony Crawford, Jason Easterling, Charlie May, Ed Gipson and George Lynn. The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to Comfort Care Hospice and the wonderful staff of Bill Nichols State Veterans Home for their support. Wilkes, Mr. Larry Jeffcoat age 71, a resident of Montgomery, AL passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 at a local healthcare facility. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Brookside Funeral Home with Rev. David Dopson officiating. Interment followed at Able Cemetery. Mr. Wilkes was a retired plumber in the Tri-County area. He was also in the United States Navy. He is survived by his daughter Nan Marie Wilkes Curtis of Millbrook, AL, sons Jeffery Flint Wilkes (Rhonda) of Elmore, AL, Larry Scott Wilkes (Sharon) of Deatsville, AL, brothers Billy Wilkes (Jerri) of Montgomery, AL, Bit Wilkes (Linda) of Brantley, AL, grandchildren Cole Curtis, Casey Wilkes, Kaylee Wilkes, Scottie Wilkes and Julianne Wilkes. Spivey, Mrs Evelyn, age 81, a resident of Millbrook, AL, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 18, 2014, 10 a.m. at Brookside Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Naylor officiating. Interment followed at Brookside Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Spivey was a member of Coosada Baptist Church and Eastern Star. Mrs. Spivey is survived by husband, Herman Spivey of Millbrook, AL, daughter, Sandra ( Johnny) Davenport, sons, Harold (Gail) Blankenship of Piedmont, AL; Albert ( Ruth) Blankenship of Martinsville, VA; step daughter, Kathy (Benny) Cartee of Greenville, SC; step son, Wade (Vickie) Spivey of Shelbyville, TN; Craig (Jan) Spivey of Pickens, SC; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Jason Kelly, Will Boartfield, Jason Gray, Roland Ventura, Ricky Myrick and Jack Allen. Family received friends on Thursday, July 17, 2014, 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Savage, Ms. Donna Kay age 48, a resident of Slapout, AL passed away on July 19, 2014 at her residence. She was born September 8, 1965 in Columbus, GA to Ralph and Pansy Savage. Her gift is our memory of a lady who truly knew the secret to life. Donna was the smile at the Smokehouse Restaurant, who took care of it all. If you could feel the love she had for me, you would know how to fly. To be inspiring is Christ like, and she inspires me. She loved me unconditionally, gave me confidence, encouragement and you know what for too. She was my lover and best friend. She was the reason I awoke and the reason I could not wait to come home. She brought my smile. She inspired me and others as well. Full of love and touched by an heir of southern royalty, she will always be an inspiration. Donna Kay is survived by her partner Laura B. McLeod, sisters Amy Savage Sheppard, Gina M. Savage, Margaret Savage Moss and one brother David L. Savage.

Milam, Mr. Darrell Lloyd age 54, a resident of Millbrook, AL passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from the chapel of Brookside Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Weierbach officiating. Interment followed in Brookside Memorial Gardens. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents H.C. and Harriet Woodward Milam, his brothers Steve Milam and David Milam. He is survived by his sisters Carol Jean Boyd of Millbrook, AL and Linda Harris (Bob) of Northport, AL. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Supreme Court Justice concerned about civics education

A few weeks ago Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jim Main (pictured right) spoke to students at the Jones School of Law at Faulkner University. In addition to reviewing the diversity of the Alabama Supreme Court, Main stressed the importance of civics education in our schools and the importance of promoting civics by the soon to be lawyers.Read more...
