Stanhope Elmore’s Brandon Hamilton was selected in the compensation
(called supplemental by some) first round of Major League’s Baseball
draft last week. The strong armed righthander interested many scouts in
the last few years primarily with his blazing fastball. His ability was
impressive enough to have the Detroit Tigers select him early in the draft.
The compensation round allows teams to choose early with selections afforded
them when they lose players to free agency.
Hamilton was the 60th overall choice in the draft. There are
50 rounds to the draft and a total of 1,453 players were drafted. Eligible
players are those who just graduated high school, as are college players
who have either already turned 21 or have completed their junior or senior
seasons. As well, junior-college players are eligible, regardless of how
many years of school they’ve completed. Players from Canada and Puerto
Rico are also eligible to be drafted, but other foreign talents are signed
on a free-agent basis.
