Watts’ memory lingers; golf  tourney to help RIF charity

The late Truel Watts

By ELIZABETH ROY
and BRIAN HODGE

For many in Millbrook Father’s Day will be remembered because of the loss suffered by the city including family and friends of the late Truel Watts. Watts was a key figure in the operation of the city as he supervised the utility and building services for the city. He was also active in a number of community service organizations.
In addition to being a civic servant Watts was also an avid golfer. It is in honor of him that The Pines Golf Club will host its second annual Truel D. Watts Memorial Golf Tournament.  Built in 1990, by Watts’ good friend Bob Wall, Watts’ proposed the idea to have it built.
“He had the vision and Bob had the backing,” said Truel’s widow, Sylvia Watts.
This tournament is special, not only because it recognizes the passing of a generous man, but the proceeds go directly to Watts’ favorite charity Reading is Fundamental Program, RIF.  RIF is geared towards lower income, lower socioeconomic preschool children. Kiwanis International, through the RIF Program, buys and distributes books three times a year, free of charge. After the distribution, Kiwanians then go into the schools and read the books to the children.
“For many of the children these are the only books they have. That is why he was so involved. He was a very caring, giving person. He put everybody else before himself,” said Sylvia.
Avid golfers, many of whom have played in tournaments with Watts will pay $200.00 per four person team or $50.00 per individual to enter the tournament. All proceeds will directly to Cathy Gafford, director of the Reading is Fundamental program.
The prizes offered for a hole in one are Ben Hogan irons, a Dell computer, a Bose radio and $25,000.
Registration is required by June 15 to participate in the charity tournament as space is limited.  The tournament will be held June 23. For information call 285-0800.
